![]() ![]() The top-selling item on The Deck’s special football menu, the corn dogs have been popular with foodies and photogs. I always try to think outside of the box with food.” This is similar to what most people eat at tailgates, but upgraded to a different status. Something with strong flavors that’s easy to eat with your hands. “A great tailgate food is something that goes well with beer and is going to soak up a little bit of the alcohol. “It’s definitely a good hangover food because it has fat in it. The dish is also appealing to the stomach for tailgaters or those watching the NFL on Sunday after a rough Saturday night. They call it dirt, but it’s that same concept. It’s the same thing where you’ll see crushed-up Oreos under a dessert. “The bright red color is not a natural color, but it helps make the plate look vibrant and it’s appealing to the eyes. I think it’s relatable to people,” Nash says. “I know there’s a huge following with Flaming Hot Cheetos - how to eat them without getting the red fingers and all that sort of stuff. You want a 50-50 blend of nice little pieces with the actual dust.” I think if you put the Cheetos on top, you get better flavor, too. That’s where the nacho cheese on the outside came from and then the extra crunch. Food needs, for me, have to have texture. “The batter soaks up the Cheetos and it turns into all one texture, rather than two. ![]() They lose that crunch,” he tells InsideHook. “I’ve seen other corn dogs where they literally put the Flaming Hot Cheetos in the batter. Topped with cheese sauce, tapatío and green onions in addition to crushed-up Cheetos, Nash’s corn dogs are an upgrade on some novelty dogs he’s seen on other menus in the past. That being the case, executive chef Todd Nash of The Deck at Moonshine Flats in downtown San Diego really didn’t have a choice about what type of dust he was going to use to top the corn dogs he just added onto the restaurant’s specials menu for football season. Oh, and the spaghetti noodle bowl that we made as well….Whether it’s on hot chicken, awesome almonds or served straight up, there is nothing true junk food junkies find more addictive and desirable than the rush that comes with ingesting flavor dust.Īnd, though it’s a hotly debated topic among dustheads, there’s no variety of flavor dust that really rivals the reddish runoff from Flaming Hot Cheetos. ![]() And for eating the Bacon Weave Taco that we made. ![]() So Jessica, thanks for stopping by, thanks for hopping in the kitchen with me and most importantly, thanks for actually eating this ridiculous sandwich. Yes, the guy who breads almost every single thing he makes in Flamin’ Hot Cheetos needed a little variety… I understand how ridiculous that sounds…. The same goes for the middle of the sandwich, any melty cheese will work, I just went with mozzarella and Cheddar to get a bit of variety with the sandwich. They both turned out equally as awesome and I’m sure that any cheese with a low melt point like Gouda, Fontina or Colby would work just as well. When I originally made the sandwich with Jessica we used Gruyère for the two squares that became the bread, but when I re-made it for this blog post I used apple smoked mozzarella just because I was out of Gruyère the second time around. So, I’m now referring to it as the Ultimate Flamin’ Hot Cheese Sandwich! I originally wrote an entire blog post about this sandwich referring to it as a grilled cheese before I realized that since it was actually deep fried and nothing about it was grilled that it can’t technically be called a grilled cheese. A few weeks back Jessica Tighe from CBS 58 here in Milwaukee stopped by my house to do a story about DudeFoods - which you can check out here - and specifically requested that she and I make something new and ridiculous, so here’s what I came up with - a sandwich that has deep fried Flamin’ Hot Cheetos breaded squares of cheese for the bread with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos mozzarella sticks and melted Cheddar in the middle. ![]()
